You, angel darling, don't need a halo to look heavenly. All you need is a visit to our Vintage & Retro Sale this weekend; a retrotastic blazer/dress/pair of dazzling shoes later and you'll be a picture of perfection. Just what you need to snag the man/lady/lady-man of your dreams this Valentine's Day. Indeed, on the weekend of love, we’ll be here selling mountains of insanely cool hand picked vintage & retro clothes from Hibernian House's very own penthouse. Before you get too excited, I should mention that it is, as per usual, in Sydney and, unless you've invented a transportation device, probably won't be financially viable for you international folk. Though, once you got here, it would be bargains galore so, you know, it'd all probably even out in the end. Not much in store is over $20, with prices starting at a measly $1. Katrina and Dominque won't be selling quite as regularly after this weekend so they've slashed prices on almost all of their stock. If I didn't know better, I'd say that we *invented* the word bargain. Not only is it cheap, it's also good. Very good. We've spent the better part of the last month running around collecting amazing stock for our already bulging rails from Melbourne, Sydney and everywhere in between.

Our House
Yes, this is another post directed only to Sydney-siders. Sorry, international, foreign and sexy talkin' readers.
We have a big and beautiful room available as of the 9th of Feb in our snazzy Surry Hills penthouse. If you're interested, or know someone who is, please pass this on and/or get in contact with us at owlandthegrapes@gmail.com. The room is seriously huge - with high ceilings and stunning views of the city skyline - and so is best suited to a couple but if you're on the larger side/have tons of shit/like luxurious living, we promise we won't discriminate. The apartment itself is also very large - a four bedroom place on the top floor of a famous heritage-listed, graffiti ridden, green maze of a warehouse building with jazz on Mondays and dance class on Wednesdays if you know where to look. We have a balcony for breakfasts, rooftop for beers, courtyard for picnics, dining room and kitchen, two lounge rooms, bathroom and reading room. No parking (we're an environmentally friendly lot) but we're located a minute's walk from Central Station and there's public transport aplenty. Close to Crown St, Oxford St and pretty much everywhere, it's only a short walk for coffee, sambos, beer, music, op shops, tattoos and other fun stuff. The current residents, of which there are four, are stylists, DJs, writers and runners of a monthly vintage and retro sale which takes place in the second living room (don't worry, it won't impede on your space). They are also incredibly good looking (so, you know, make sure you fit in and all). The new housemate(s) must have a sense of humour and like to keep a clean house. It would be a plus if you had a microwave, a fridge (because we'd like another) and are in some way artistic/musical because that's just the kind of people we're into.
Rent is $1250 per calendar month (which works out to about $288 per week). No water or gas bills but we do ask you to chip in for electricity, though that won't set you back much. Bond is $1250.
Lastly, if it helps, our cat has offered to sit on your face. She's pretty much the best cat in the world. In fact, she was even featured in Elle Korea a few months ago. That's right, a FAMOUS cat on your face. Awesome.

Vintage & Retro Sale at Hibernian House, Number 10? 9? Who the fuck knows. Crisis averted: *January Edition*

Presumably, by now you know the deal. I give you the deets, you either go, "Yeah nice one Emma, have you forgotten that I live on the OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD? WHY DO YOU TORMENT ME LIKE THIS?" Or, "Oh yes, that would be lovely, last time I went it was an absolute blast so I wouldn't want to miss out on this month's, which seems not only to be bigger and better, but cheaper too, something I didn't even think possible." If you're one of the annoyed latter, I implore you to stop reading, right now. If not, I have some very exciting news for you. Our next sale is this weekend, on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of January. We have mountains of amazing clothes and accessories for both sexes available for your purchase for cheap cheap cheap and we simply cannot think of a better way to spend your Christmas dosh. See, we've marked down a bunch of stuff, making things even cheaper than usual, the reason being little else except that we can't seem to shake the holiday spirit. I Know There's an Answer
Semi recently I was been asked to answer a couple of little questionares. The first was a follow up to the article I wrote for Brighton Frocks on Brighton Fashion Weekend with the purpose of having them publish it on their website (I'll update this post with a link when it is) and the second lot of question and answers was part of my application for a month long internship at 2threads. It was all (until now) sitting unpublished on Bobby's laptop gathering cyber dust and generally being a waste of space so I thought I might post it here. If I've repeated myself (in fact, there's no 'if' in the matter), I invite you to skim or even skip this post.
2THREADS: WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DESTINATION FOR A FASHION FIX? "Earlier this year, whilst in England, I covered the Brighton Fashion Weekend. I spent some time travelling around the back alleys of Europe and trawling through boxes of goodies in tiny vintage shops and totally fell head over boots for the place (on more than one occasion, almost in the literal sense of the phrase). Next time I make my way over I‘d love to cover Amsterdam or Berlin Fashion Week, if only for my own blog, Owl and the Grapes."
LIST YOUR TOP 5 SOURCES FOR FASHION & STYLE INSPIRATION.
Whilst I, like most ladies, love Alexander Wang, Preen and Balmain, I don’t think I could resist interviewing Karl Lagerfeld. If only to ask how he comes up with those Twitter gems. “Florals are for middle-aged women with weight problems.” Or, “Fur is not murder, but it is quite expensive.” Wow. Both statements are completely wrong. But still, wow. And you know what? The more he does wrong the more I love him. Once we’d covered the whole “Are you actually mad?” thing, I’d move onto more important issues: Colours, collections and in what year he was really born. I’d quite love to pry my way into his mind and have a swim around.
WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOU ON A SATURDAY NIGHT? Out and about on the bustling Sydney scene (often, wherever free alcohol can be found), ‘networking’ (it’s my new favourite word) and snapping photos. If I’m not out, it’s likely it’s because I’m frickin’ knackered after a hard day’s work running my monthly Vintage and Retro Market from my Surry Hills warehouse. In the case of the latter, I’ll spend my evening drinking smoked tea, reading, blogging, organising my next market and listening to a whole lot of very good music.
BRIGHTON FROCKS: WHY DID YOU ENTER THE BRIGHTON FROCKS COMPETITION? I entered the competition because I thought it would be a great opportunity to gain experience. I simply love fashion and love Brighton so what could be better than being part of the event that marks the combination of the two? As you'll know if you've read my article, I had also never interviewed anybody before, so, while I was super nervous, it was good to get out there and do it. Now, hopefully, next time I do it I'll be a little better and there'll be a little less pee in my pants.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE CARE ABOUT FASHION? What do you think of when you think of Marilyn Monroe? I think of that white halter neck dress. And Audrey Hepburn? Why, Breakfast at Tiffany's of course, and that stunning black Givenchy dress. Fashion is a way of expressing yourself. 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' is a pretty piece of advice however, unfortunately, it's not at all human nature. Good personal grooming and a solid sense of style are more or less essentials. And anyway, who doesn't like playing dress ups?
WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO ENTER NEXT YEAR? Yes, of course. It was a fantastic weekend. Everybody involved with Brighton Fashion Weekend is so friendly, and they were all only too keen to have a chat. It's a wonderful chance to make industry contacts and the article was great fun to write. Oh, and I came out with a few goodies too.
WHERE DO YOU HOPE TO FIND YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS TIME? In 10 years time, I intend to be a professional writer. I would love to write for Russh or Frankie; Australia (where I live for most of the year) has some really great publications. I've always wanted to write a book, but I think it's important to find my own voice first. Also, back in my Sydney warehouse, I run a monthly Vintage and Retro Market. I'd love to have the finances to be able to facilitate the entire floor as a store. A space where people could drop in and buy vintage, retro, some new and some old clothes and pretty things, drink coffee made by our (currently non-existent) in-house barista, have a beer and hang out on our (also non-existent) Astroturfed roof. I would also have a cinema room with super comfy little seats and a gigantic projector that screened cult hits and shit we like but no-one else does. Yes, I'd like one of those in Sydney, one in Brighton and one in Berlin please.

God! Show Me Magic
You see that chick on the far left in the below photograph? The one who, by some incredible coincidence, was standing just one row in front of me at a Jamie T gig we went to a few weeks ago? SHE'S WEARING A BOW ON HER HEAD THAT I HAND-SEWED AND SOLD AT OUR SEPTEMBER MARKET. Awesome? Only a little bit... GOTCHA! Seriously? It's probably the most awesome thing to ever happen to anyone.
It has to be said however, that she took my floral bow off half way through the gig to place upon her head a sailor's hat. Which she, later that evening, removed to replace with a headband. So, you know, it could just be that she was a complete head wear slut and she didn't actually like my bow at all. It could just be that my bow was one of hundreds that day. But, just like getting down and dirty with an ol' weathered prostitute, just because she's a head wear slut doesn't make my five minutes of loving any less awesome.

Vintage & Retro Sale at Hibernian House, No. 6
Greetings Sydney-siders!
We wouldn’t be entirely surprised had you thought that, after you guys bought us out CLEAN at last month’s sale, we’d never be back. You’d be wrong however, as we saved some Grade A European stock out the back for another time (read: THIS time), and we’ve been oh-so-busy dashing around town collecting new (old) retro goodies to fill our rails. We've picked up a remarkable amount of goodies, including a pair of beautiful Karen Walker denim shorts, loads of shudderingly cool t-shirts for the boys, leather skirts and shorts, a Diesel check shirt, teddy bear, floral and embroided vests, some number of amazing cropped, midriff-bearing pieces and, of course, florals and great prints in every cut.
We’ll also have refreshments, The Kinks (on the speakers), a comfy couch, shoes, super stylish accessories, bric-a-brac, books and MOUNTAINS OF HAND PICKED VINTAGE & RETRO CLOTHES from loads of cool cats including Marissa Ziesing (of fashion label FTW), Bobby Townsend (of Drum Media), Dominique Legrand, Katrina Noorbergen (of Cassette Kids), stylist Grace Atkinson (from NO magazine), David Abram (of Jingle Jangle) and Emma Daniels (of OwlandtheGrapes.com). It certainly won't just be for the ladies either. We've got three man-oh-man sellers with loads of mantastic pieces. And if it all gets a bit hot and sweaty we'll even crack out the fan for you. Alternatively, grab one of our sweet little one-piece swimsuits.
Almost EVERYTHING in store is around the $20 mark. And when I say almost, I ain't exaggerating. However, do remember that we only be accept cold, hard CASH (we like to do things the old fashioned way). If you do come unprepared however, there’s an ATM just down the street.
Also, now that we’re back from the EU we can finally make this sale a regular by-the-calendar event. So, from here on in, every second weekend of the month, rain, dust storm, apocalypse or shine, you’ll find us up at 601 selling our wares. We’ll also be open longer hours for all you kids who want to sunbathe your little white arse blistering red at the beach. We’ll be open an hour extra either end of the day on Saturday and an hour earlier on Sunday.

Vintage and Retro Sale at Hibernian House, Part V

Guess what? Our vintage and retro sales are back! With loads of goodies from countries afar. And we'll be open all weekend! This might possibly be the single most exciting invitation of your month slash life.
I know, it hurt, right? Six months sans our (usually monthly) sale. You guys must be frickin' starving for some retro action. Well, never fear, the first sale's approaching faster than the Enterprise at warp speed. The best part? We brought back so many goodies from Europe to share with you. Paris? Check. London? Check. Berlin? Checkity Check Point Charlie. The first sale will be loads of fun and you can expect even lower prices too, with most pieces being $20 and under. We will have liquid refreshments, Bat For Lashes (on the speakers), one famous cat, a big comfy couch to chill the flip out on, shoes, handbags and belts, bric-a-brac, a little jewellery, books and mountains of hand picked vintage & retro clothes from loads of cool cats including Marissa Ziesing (of fashion label FTW), stand up comic Julia Clark, Bobby Townsend (of Drum Media and Bobbysix.com), Dominique Legrand, Katrina Noorbergen (of Cassette Kids fame) and ME.

Magazine
The talented and discerning people at ElleGirl Korea have done a feature page on yours truly. You can find it in the March issue of the magazine. Yes, I do realise that it's April now. However, you see, apparently it takes weeks upon weeks to ship things from Korea. By the time it finally arrived in Sydney, I had already left for England. Hence I had to coach my Mother in the art of scanning and saving a picture file as a picture file, not as a Word document. This kind of implies that we were successful. We weren't. In fact, I just wasted an hour and a bit of both our time. Thank God for Skype, otherwise I would be even more broke than I am now (if such a thing were possible). Lucky for me however, over the weekend she had a computer-savvy friend visit her who, on hearing about the saga, wham bam emailed it right over. Et voila!
I feel that it's important to mention at this point that I don't speak Korean. So for all I know they could be talking about my weirdly long and wonky fingers in the photo where I hold Miranda July's No One Belongs Here More Than You. Vintage and Retro Fashion at Hibernian House, Part III
Presumably, by now you know the deal. If you live in Sydney (or anywhere in Australia - it's totally worth the trip), you should be a regular at our Vintage and Retro Markets. Our next one is THIS WEEKEND, on the 14th and 15th of February.
We shall have food (of the home baked kind) courtesy of Bake Sale For Art, liquid refreshments, The Beatles and other awesome music (of the Ipod kind), a couple of curious cats, a big comfy couch to chill the flip out on, shoes, handbags and belts, bric-a-brac, a little jewellery, books and LOTS OF VINTAGE & RETRO CLOTHES.
This time 'round we'll have heaps more guest sellers including Marissa Ziesing (of fashion label FTW and whose styling can be seen in the latest Duke Magazine), Holiday Sidewinder and Daisy M. Tulley (of Bridezilla), Emma Harrison (of Owl and the Grapes), Swimgreen Treasures, Imogen Smyth-Prado, stand up comic Julia Clark, Frances Anderson, Bobby Townsend (of Drum Media and Bobbysix.com) and Dominique Legrand.
We've all been working extra hard to replenish our stocks with loads of new (old) shit in the aftermath of last month's masses of cool kids who emptied us like a glass of milk left out for Santa. So come along, invite your friends and bring your housemates.

Tight Fit
This morning, I was again photographed by Xiaohan of Sydney street blog XSSAT. I'm certain those photos will appear here soonish, along with the terrible answers I gave in the post-shoot interview (I had Sunday morning brain freeze). Afterwards, I found myself still in the mood to play dress-up (when am I not?) With temperatures having hit the high thirties in Sydney all week, a much-needed cloudy day meant that I was able to shimmy around our courtyard in not one, but two pairs of tights, without my legs melting.

Home Sweet Home
Dear Sydneysiders and those wishing to move to Sydney,
We are looking for a new housemate. Bobby and I are flying off to Europe in March and hence there will be a room (the best room) available in our Surry Hills abode for five months during our trip.
The new housemate needn't necessarily have a sense of humour as Bobby and I won't be here to look at you sullenly when you get told, like, the best joke in the whole world and don't laugh. So, you know, whatever. It would be a plus if you have an OC neatness (Obsessive Compulsive sans the Disorder), glasses (of either kind), and an instrument, however, as that would be nice.
The room is comfortably sized with high ceilings. The apartment is huge (I mean, it's the penthouse, what do you expect?), and the housemates incredibly good looking. Actually, make that reasonably. Bobby and I not being there brings the bar down considerably. It's a four bedroom apartment on the top floor of a heritage-listed, graffiti ridden, green maze of a warehouse building. We have a balcony for breakfasts, rooftop for beers and courtyard for picnics, dining room and kitchen, two lounge rooms, bathroom and reading room. No parking (we're an environmentally friendly lot) but we're located a minute's walk from Central Station and there's public transport aplenty. Close to Crown St, Oxford St and pretty much everywhere, it's only a short walk for coffee, sambos, beer, music, op shops, tattoos and other fun stuff.
The room is fully furnished. With our incredible sense of interiors, this means you're getting the use of some awesome shit. Beautiful shelves, the sweetest little drawers, a bed & mattress, the best mirror in the whole world (we've named him Reflector, pronounced ReflecTOR) a stunning blue chair, a desk, a large assortment of frames and other such cool things.
And, if it helps, our cat has offered to sit on your face. No pressure.
$200 per week. Fully furnished. Five month lease (mid March to mid August). Four weeks bond. Internet is available.

Red Turned White
I'm on a roll. Not in the way that a tumble weed might roll but more the kind of roll the toilet paper gets on when you pull a little too hard and suddenly it's all over the floor and oh shit now you have to go down to the shop and spend your last $6 on some more before the housemates stink up a shit because you used the last toilet paper roll. On a wee. Or maybe even the kind of roll Einstein was on when he discovered that yes, E really does equal MC squared. Okay, I know, I'm not no genius or anything (double negative, anyone?) but, he was German and I'm half German and Hitler was Austrian. So let's just let that double negative sit there.
This much spoken about roll and the successes of the weekend can't be published in a Cheat's Guide to the Owl and the Grapes kind of post because we all know I'm not very good at summarising (you should hear me explain my dreams. They. Just. Don't. Stop.) So make yourself a cup of tea as it's going to be a long one - if you call a few paragraphs long. By my standards, it is. Despite taking a very intense speed reading class when I was in high school, I'm still a slow reader. It's taken me six months to get half way through Lolita.
The long awaited - mostly by me - Part Two of our Vintage and Retro Fashion pop-up store proved more successful than a full-bellied polar bear's nap in the winter time. The extraordinary numbers that came through our door on Saturday was absolutely overwhelming. Thankfully Sunday was a little quieter as, with a hangover the size of Turkey, using the mathematical skill it takes to calculate someone's change proved relatively difficult.
I must give my wholehearted thank you to the lovely and talented folk at Two Thousand for featuring us. I have little doubt the majority of people found us through them. If you live in Sydney and are not a regular reader, get to it and subscribe because reading their newsletter is one of the online highlights of my week. It was an ironically lovely coincidence that the one week I failed to read it, a very kindly customer should inform me that our little pop-up store was featured. Awesome.
Also keep an eye out at XSSAT for photos of Bobby, Elle and I on our roof. I was photographed by two Sydney Street Style blogs during the weekend, it's just unfortunate that I only have a card from one, and my memory isn't all that good in my old age. Yes, I'm only twenty but I wear grandma boots and often find gigs too loud. What do you expect? You can see more photos of us and our store over here. The ice on my finger bun roll was receiving an email from Suzanne of Weardrobe asking if I would feature on their front page (I realise that they have a number of girls featured on there each week, but it's still nice to feel loved - in a strictly business kind of way). I'll post the feature in full when it's published but in the meantime keep an eye out for me on their site.

Due to this jumbled brain of mine however, I failed to realise until much later that the competition called for Sequin and Sheer, not Lace and Sheer as I had thought. Not one to let something go to waste though, I thought I'd post the photos up here. Behold, Sequin and Sheer lost in translation (lost meaning jumbled and translation meaning my silly little head).

Vintage and Retro Fashion at Hibernian House, Part II

Due to the overwhelming success of December's sale, we decided there was no way we couldn't do it again. So, on the second weekend of 2009 (to give you a chance to recover from your New Years hangover), we'll again be collaborating to bring you a weekend-long pop up store. Similar to last time, we will have food (of the home made cookie kind), liquid refreshment, The Beach Boys (of the Ipod kind), one cozy cat (the second one is grounded), a big comfy couch to chill the fuck out on, shoes, handbags and belts, bric-a-brac, a little jewellery, books and LOTS OF RETRO & VINTAGE CLOTHES, mostly for the lady-folk amongst you.

Similar to last time, we will have food (of the home made cookie kind), liquid refreshment, The Beach Boys (of the Ipod kind), one cozy cat (the second one is grounded), a big comfy couch to chill the fuck out on, shoes, handbags and belts, bric-a-brac, a little jewellery, books and LOTS OF RETRO & VINTAGE CLOTHES, mostly for the lady-folk amongst you.

Picking up after you
Excluding a pee and a poop here and there, the man and I spent an entire day last week in the living room. Indeed, we didn't leave the house at all. No, we weren't sick. And we hadn't been grounded by the old man across the road. In fact, we did it by choice - hoping to be productive.
Amongst a few other bits and bobs, including a hand-sewed bow tie, this little owl was a product of the above mentioned day. He was born out of an old pick (or plectrum if you're that kind of reader). Hopefully, this week will find us at the bead store, buying chain and loops and completing the little hoot as a necklace. By Saturday I should have three or four to sell at the Vintage and Retro Pop-up store. Of course, that is if the old man doesn't ground us again.

Vintage and Retro Fashion at Hibernian House

For you and you only, Owl and the Grapes and SixOhOne are collaborating to create a one-day pop up store. Just like those fairy tale pop up books you had as a child, but better. You wouldn't have imagined such a thing was possible back then, but trust us, it certainly is.

Okay, so the 'collaboration' thing is a partial lie, considering that Owl and the Grapes and SixOhOne are essentially run by the same people. That the event will be a treasure trove of vintage and retro fashion however, is definitely no lie.

In the Green Room housed by SixOhOne, we will be bringing to you all that Cinderalla could have ever wanted. Indeed, we will have food (of the cookie kind), drink (of the BYO kind), The Beach Boys (of the Ipod kind), two cozy cats, a big comfy couch to chill the fuck out on, shoes, bric-a-brac and lots of vintage clothes, mainly of the female genre.
It's the same Saturday as Surry Hills markets so drop down before and/or after to enjoy a laid-back Saturday in our company - we're quite literally just down the street. In fact, we're close to Crown Street, Oxford Street and the City too.
Find us on Level Six of Hibernian House, 342 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills. On the corner of Kippax St, just up from Eddy Avenue, opposite Ding Dong Dang, entry via the Stained Glass sign and next door to the (dodgy) Indian restaurant. Zip up in the lift to level 5 (be patient) and there's a security gate on your right. Head up the stairs and at the top you'll see two doors. We're the one on the left. If you're worried you'll lose yourself, don't. There'll be signs.
