It's been a few weeks since I first posted about my love of those Alexander Wang Cat Eye sunglasses, and I've since acquired a similar pair off eBay which I might just wed, I love them so. I just stumbled across the above pair however, at Spanish Moss Vintage and couldn't resist posting a picture. At $39, they won't cost you your life savings and they've even got the dipped tips. Nom nom nom.
I've spent a number of hours recently racking my brain to procure reasons why, exactly, I don't need to spend $325 on a pair of sunglasses. Of course, the reasons come steadily and convincingly. The most convincing perhaps being that I don't have $325. And yet, despite this essentially be-all-and-end-all fact, I can't stop thinking about - and drooling over - Alexander Wang's Cat Eye Shades. Seemingly, I'm not the only one either - every fashion blogger, editor, celebrity and their cat have been have been frothing at the mouth over them. Most recently, I spotted them in an editorial in the latest edition of Russh Magazine (pictured above) in which they sat perched upon model Lara's pretty head, somewhat resembling a little adorning bow. Perhaps I'm alone in seeing a similarity but they also remind me a little of the Giles Deacon sunglasses that Dree Hemingway wore in those incredibly over-blogged yet simultaneously incredible photos taken some six months ago now (pictured below).
All this shady porn has clearly been influencing my sourcing too, as I find myself time and time again picking up - and often purchasing - intriguing 1950s shades of a similar kitty cat style. The below pictured shades will be on sale (along with a heap of others) at our next Sydney-based Vintage & Retro Market.
If you're after a more modern look however (or if you have chubby cheeks that don't agree with petite feminine vintage sunnies, like me), a quick look on eBay today found these babies which, coming in at just under $20, could just subside my want for those from the magnificent Mr. Wang.
The man and I held another Vintage and Retro sale last weekend and it was a massive bloomin' success. I only failed on one account: I totallyforgot to tell all you lovely readers about it - I know, it's an epic fail, isn't it? Best sign up to the newsletter (email me at owlandthegrapes@gmail.com with 'Subscribe' in the subject line) or join our facebook group to ensure this never, ever happens again. Hopefully though, if you're a Sydney kid, you heard about it anyway. We were featured everywhere from uber cool newsletter Two Thousand to independent radio station FBi (or so my friend Guy says). And honestly? It's probably for the best that I didn't tell you because if it had been any more packed on Saturday I think the place would have burst. And then we'd never be able to have another sale again. So really, I did the right thing. Alas, I feel bad so, to make up for my abandonment, I will tell you well in advance (ie now) that the next sale will be on the 12th and 13th of December. If you play on my guilt enough I might even give you a discount on the weekend. Which, given how cheap everything already is, basically means I'm offering to GIVE you a heap of awesome clothes. How can you be angry with me after that? I'll tell you: You can't.
Here are some of the man's photos from the weekend:
Sweetest dog ever. I offered his Mum a swap: Clothes for dog. She wasn't too keen.
It was 7-Eleven Day. This meant free slurpees for everyone. I had two (or maybe it was three?) and then hit a major slurpee low mid afternoon. I'm pretty sure I had the sugar shakes. Amazing.
Millie threatened to jump out the window because someone stepped on her tail. It was pretty traumatising. She's okay now though, thanks for asking.

Okay so I thought if maybe I looked like a robot and wore all robot-y things then this might not turn into a blog post about cats. Yeah, well I was wrong. Today I had to go to the doctor to kindly ask him for lots and lots of Codeine and along the way this black cat started running across the street and meowing at me. Like, really meowing. So I sat by him and pet him for a few minutes (but then I had to go because the call of the Codeine was louder than the call of the cat.) And, honestly, the way this cat came running up makes me pretty sure that I'm becoming notorious amongst the Eastbourne cat society for scratching cats behind the ear. They all know me now. If this is the last you hear of me you might want to just assume that I got consumed by a herd of meowing, nuzzling cats. Seriously.
Also, being a robot for a day was totally awesome and, although Mr. Ford did compare me to someone out of Starlight Express (not exactly the high point of my fashion career), it still comes highly recommended.
You asked for it, you got it folks. I just couldn't keep turning down all the requests upon requests for photos of this frickin' fine feline so, may I present to you ladies and gentlemen, Short Legs Mini Cat McGhee!
I think that it's important to mention something at this point because I feel like I'd be lying to you if I didn't admit the measly little fact that the pleads were primarily - okay, solely - from me. Sorry. There's my crying confession to you. Not unlike the girl who had to confess to her boyfriend that no, that moustache on my finger isn't permanant marker. Yes, that is a tatoo. It's a FINGERSTACHE, bitch. Got it?
Also, we're going to a school production of The Wizard of Oz on Friday which means I have an excuse to dress up as a lion and/or flying monkey and I don't think there are words enough to explain how excited I am. I'll just say this: Rawr ee oo oo ee aa (those are the sounds of a flying lion monkey).
I'm 110% sure I'm going to make an awesome old lady. You know the way that sportsmen talk about giving it 110%. That's how confident I am. I'll be the grandma with the four cats, huge glasses, pearl necklaces, lots of lace and killer style. I'll be the red wine that peaks in it's late '60s. I know this because, truth be told, I'm more or less an old lady already. And I can only get better at it with practice, right? I'm weary of going out more than once a day lest I exhaust myself too much for the evening's activities, I wear stupendous grandma undies (my thinking is that everything else is high waisted, so why shouldn't my undies be too?) and lately I can't take off my lace gloves or pearl necklace, not to mention my houndstooth jacket and little old lady hat. I love cats and squirrels and while I'm no gardener, I bought a coriander plant the other day.
On a separate note, we booked our trip to Paris the other day, we'll be arriving on the 6th of May and staying till the 12th. That means there's only three weeks till we can indulge in cheese, wine and baguette's in Paris' left bank and, sadly, only four months till we return to Sydney.
Finally, I'm going to leave you with a music video for The Wave Pictures because, while I'm not far from being an old lady, I can't say I'm a fan of Val Doonican. We ventured out to Brighton to see these fellows last night. If you can get past his voice (it might take a little while) they're very good indeed. Read Bobby's review of their latest album here.
P.S. There's a cat that lives down the street from us in Eastbourne who has very short legs, so much so that when I pet him he sometimes falls over, and so we have (very creatively) called him Short Legs Mini Cat McGhee. We've even made a song to go with his name. And it's only just clicked that he's probably a Munchkin cat and/or a dwarf and now I feel really guilty. I just want everyone to know that I have nothing against little cats with little legs. There's nothing wrong with being little. Unless you're a pair of undies.
If you can tell me with a straight face that you do not find a kitten racing around the room trying to catch bubbles with its tiny paws entertaining, either you have never tried it or you are lying to yourself. While the boy called me simple, it was indeed the most I laughed all evening - so much so that my stomach ached.
Indeed, now that we (the word we being used loosely, and actually referring to my housemates) have a kitten, this is how I spend my Sundays.
